Shortly after his 97th birthday Andreas Dückstein, one of the oldest FIDE title holders, passed away. Over the course of his long career, Dückstein played against countless chess legends, beating some of the greats and drawing with others. Dückstein possessed grandmaster strength and was only denied the title for formal reasons. FIDE finally made him an honorary grandmaster.
